Why? Who? When? Where?

Hi! Welcome to the first post in my first actual blog.

I thought I'd make one post in Britain before I leave, and so that when I hand out the address to everyone it's not simply an empty page. As I have no idea how often I'll be able to update this I recommend that you sign up by email (left hand side bar), and then you get a notification the day after I post anything.

1.Why am I going to India?

As part of my medical degree I'm given the opportunity to go and work in any hospital anywhere in the world for 8 weeks. I wanted to go somewhere where I'd make a small difference rather than being just another student, where I could learn about medicine that I'd never see in the UK, and where I'd never been before. As I've never been to India and I'll never have 8 weeks 'off' again, I thought I'd give it a shot.

2. Who am I going with?

Well, I'm going on my own. But I'm attached to a hospital run by The Leprosy Mission, who kindly offered me this amazing opportunity and have made organisation a load easier. Half of the patients I see will be affected by leprosy and its complications - you can find more out about this disease and the hopital by clicking the links on the left. My boyfriend, Ryan, is flying out at the end of my placement and we're spending my 9th and 10th weeks in India exploring.

3. When am I going?
I'll be away from March 29th to June 8th.

4. Where am I going?
I'm flying into Delhi, then taking an overnight train to the large city of Allahabad. From there I'll be taken to the nearby town of Naini, where the hospital is. I'll be eating and sleeping on the hospital site.

So that's about all I know for now! My visa has been obtained, flights are booked, rehydration sachets were given to me at Christmas and I'm receiving cereal bars instead of Easter eggs to enjoy in my new home on March 31st.
